Coastal Mapping
Greenwater Foundation is collaborating with Caladan Oceanic and TCarta on a new project to contribute satellite derived bathymetric data on coastal areas to Seabed 2030’s effort to map 100% of the ocean floor. Coastal areas will be mapped in critical areas throughout the world and a plan will be created for generating additional data to complete mapping of coastal areas at a significantly reduced cost using machine learning.
Marine Conservation
At Greenwater Foundation we are dedicated to addressing key marine conservation challenges, including climate change, ocean plastics pollution, and biological collapses, by actively supporting marine science research and exploration at sea.
- Facilitating Vessels and Scientific Resources: Recent projects include, Panama: Leatherback turtle conservation, Papua New Guinea: Deep-ocean exploration of a meteor impact site, Fiji: Development of a research and conservation center, Antarctica: Research aboard the S.A. Agulhas.
- Advising and participating in Expedition Audacity. Mission: to provide an ongoing, environmentally friendly Scientific Research Expedition Sailing Vessel to facilitate researchers’ access to the most remote parts of the globe. Ongoing funding for future Expeditions will be provided through the production and sale of an Adventure Documentary filmed onboard.
- Scientific research and exploration at sea is particularly active now, and should be for the foreseeable future, because of the need to understand and find solutions and mitigation strategies.
- Greenwater Foundation has identified and continues to identify developments that signal new opportunities as well as funding for scientific research at sea.
Research vessel activities include:
- hydrographic surveying, used to produce nautical charts,
- seismic surveying of the seabed and underlying geology to detect geological features, such as those likely to contain oil or gas,
- environmental sensing, including water sampling and hydrographic sounding of the seabed,
- scientific diving and unmanned underwater vehicle research (e.g., to conduct nautical archaeology research regarding human artifacts on the seabed, such as shipwrecks), and
- fisheries research, including sea-life collection and sampling, water sampling, and acoustic fish finding.
Humanitarian Aid
Ukraine Safe Drinking Water Solutions
To provide support to the Ukrainian people, Greenwater Foundation is working on an effort to expand and supply water quality testing and treatment throughout Ukraine by:
- Helping established Ukrainian water quality groups and experts build a war-time network to field test water sources, leveraging the already robust network of churches and community groups presently supplying truckloads of humanitarian aid as well as procuring sufficient quantities of field test kits to sustain comprehensive testing.
- Greenwater Foundation’s activities include providing the field test kits, a GIS program to track water sources, a vessel and personnel to test river water and larger bodies of water; coordinating efforts; and identifying sources of funding.
Education
New York Harbor School education program
Greenwater Foundation works with the inner city public school on Governor’s Island focusing on marine and maritime education as an advisor for the school.
Program expansion goals:
- identify opportunities for underserved communities to intern on vessels and help arrange internships for individuals that are members of those communities
- base vessel there for students to use for projects such as the Billion Oyster Project to rehabilitate beds in NY harbor.
