Marine Conservation: Our Research Vessel
Our research vessel is now available for scientists and explorers
Through a very generous donation, we now own a research vessel – R/V Cosmo, a 2013 Bruce Roberts 52, Steel/Aluminum Trawler Yacht.
We are chartering our research vessel for important expeditions. Our projects focus on:
- Climate change mitigation
- Ocean plastics pollution & biological collapse solutions
- Marine biodiversity preservation
Marine Conservation: Past & Future Projects
In addition to chartering our vessel, we’re involved in numerous other marine conservation projects around the world:
Facilitating access to vessels and scientific resources
- Panama: Leatherback turtle conservation.
- Papua New Guinea: Deep-ocean exploration of a meteor impact site.
- Fiji: Development of a research and conservation center.
- Antarctica: Research aboard the S.A. Agulhas.
Advising and participating in Expedition Audacity
Mission: Provide an ongoing, environmentally friendly Scientific Research Expedition Sailing Vessel to facilitate researchers’ access to the most remote parts of the globe. Ongoing funding for future Expeditions will be provided through the production and sale of an Adventure Documentary filmed onboard.
Scientific research and exploration at sea
Particularly active now, and should be for the foreseeable future, because of the need to understand and find solutions and mitigation strategies. We’re continuously identifying developments for ocean new research and funding opportunities.
Research vessel work that we facilitate & support:
- Hydrographic surveying to produce nautical charts.
- Seismic surveying of the seabed and underlying geology to detect geological features that likely to contain oil or gas.
- Environmental sensing, including water sampling and hydrographic sounding of the seabed.
- Scientific diving and unmanned underwater vehicle research (e.g., to conduct nautical archaeology research regarding human artifacts on the seabed, such as shipwrecks).
- Fisheries research, including sea-life collection and sampling, water sampling, and acoustic fish finding.
Coastal Mapping
In collaboration with Caladan Oceanic and TCarta, we are contributing satellite-derived bathymetric data (SBD) to Seabed 2030, a project aiming to map 100% of the ocean floor.
So far, we’ve contributed 230,000+ sqkm of SBD data, across 17 nations.
A complete map of the ocean floor is crucial for:
- Climate change research
- Marine life protection
- Sustainable resource management
- Up-to-date navigation resources
We’re also developing cost-effective machine learning solutions to generate additional mapping data at a significantly reduced cost.
Humanitarian Aid
Ukraine Safe Drinking Water Solutions
To support the Ukrainian people, Greenwater Foundation is working on to expand and supply water quality testing and treatment throughout Ukraine by:
- Water testing network: Helping established Ukrainian water quality groups and experts build a war-time network to field test water sources.
- Test kits: Procuring sufficient quantities of field test kits to sustain comprehensive water testing.
- GIS program: Providing a GIS program to track water sources,
- Vessel & personnel: to test river water and larger bodies of water.
- Logistic & financial support: Coordinating efforts and identifying sources of funding.
Education
New York Harbor School Education Program
Greenwater Foundation works as an advisor for the inner city public school on Governor’s Island, focusing on marine and maritime education.
Program expansion goals:
- Identify and arrange internship opportunities for underserved communities to intern on vessels.
- Provide a vessel based in these communities for student projects, such as the Billion Oyster Project to rehabilitate beds in NY harbor.
